Sebarau Fishing Tips & Info

Sebarau or Hampala Barb is a fresh water fish that is popular amongst sport anglers.

They inhabit the clear water upper river with a mix of strong rapid and deep bottom area.
They like to hunt near the fast moving water or ambush its prey from under the dead tree branches submerged in the river. But sometime you can witness the more aggressive ones chasing the small fish up to the edge of the water by the river bank.
The bigger ones somehow inhabit the deeper area of the water and harder to lure.
They are popular for sport fishing in tropical water for their speed and power once hooked. The area they are dwelling also full of obstacles like dead trees and big rocks which normally become their escape tactic set up that get the fishing line tangle or snap. The species that reach the weight of 3 kg are normally present big challenge as their power and endurance can put the line and hooks to test.
Normally the pride and ego of the anglers lead them to use the lightest set up they can and this normally lead to their defeat to this river predator.
This fish is omnivore, their diets consist of wild fruits, insects and smaller fish. So lures that imitate a prey in distress or injured normally get their attention,or anything shiny and rattling like spoon or spinners work well on them.
They are very sensitive and easily spooked, especially the bigger and wiser ones. They may make a U-turn once they see the anglers or the lure action doesn't seems real or 'alive'.
So a slight murky water after a light rain is the best time to hunt them. Some believe that the bronze colour spoon works best during this water condition. But during very clear water condition,a fast retrieve technic normally give the fish slightest chance to notice your presence.
Sebarau can grow up to 70cm(2.3ft) long, with half that size are more common, but there was a report of a catch of 18kg in Ulu Baleh River,Sarawak, the Borneo part of Malaysia. In Sarawak they are called Adong, and its close cousin,Juak,is the one with the three vertical stripes(palang).
The flesh of this fish is pretty tasty but require extra attention to the amount of the wise/tiny bone, which make Sebarau less popular compare to its cousins,Semah and Empurau.
Sport anglers normally catch them for the trill and release them after a couple of photos for memory.
But this has come as a blessing since this has spared them from the high demand of the market, which in contrast to the rare and pricy Semah and Empurau.

The Return of The Kingfish

Fishing spanish mackerel and queen fish with fast jigging technic and diving swim bait lures. Feel the adrenalin rush and enjoy the beautiful sceneries of the sea, mountains and the sky.

Tenggiri or Spanish mackerel is one of the preferred game fish among local anglers.

It is a migratory species and during this season, it would travel from the East to South West, through the South China Sea.

The tenggiri found here during this period are much bigger and more aggressive, and the catch can weigh between 3kg and 10kg each.
Other pelagic fish such as tambun, kembong and selar, cencaru (torpedo scad), dorado, giant trevally, talang (queen fish), jenahak (golden snapper), grouper and gerut-gerut (sliver grunter) can also be found in abundance at the tukun and unjam sites.

The popular method to fish for tenggiri is by casting or jigging but bottom fishing or drifting can also be used.
For jigging or casting, metal jigs and spoons can be used while live bait is preferred for bottom fishing.
For those who carry out bottom fishing, they can also expect to target species such as jenahak, gerut-gerut and grouper while jigging and casting with feather, pintail, spoon and macro jigs can be effective for trevally and talang, aside from tenggiri.

The sea is teeming with tenggiri.
In the past month or so, anglers have been striking big with these catches, resulting in a mad rush and excitement among fishing enthusiasts to charter boats on weekends to try their luck and skill.

Tenggiri or Spanish mackerel is one of the preferred game fish among local anglers.

It is a migratory species and during this season, it would travel from the north to south, through the narrow Straits of Melaka.

Fishermen had put up tukun and unjam, both man-made fish-aggregating devices, to encourage the tenggiri to stop and hunt for smaller prey taking shelter and feeding at these artificial reefs.
As such, during the migratory season from January until March, this species would lurk near the tukun and unjam for a while before making its way down south to breed.

Fishing for tenggiri at ‘tukun’ and ‘unjam’ sites can be fun but requires a bit of skill.
These devices are made from concrete balls, old trawlers and unwanted car chassis or palm leaves tied to rope and long bamboo sticks on the top, and anchored to giant concrete sinkers on the seabed.
The popular method to fish for tenggiri is by casting or jigging but bottom fishing or drifting can also be used.

The fish here tend to be choosy about how the bait, lures and mainline are presented.
The best way to catch tenggiri is to use the duck feather jig — produced locally using white duck feather — tied to a small torpedo-shaped sinker attached with a hook.
This local jig, which is unique in style, is known to be effective and productive in terms of fishing for tenggiri.
However, to use it effectively, one must have a bit of skill to retrieve it quickly in an intermittent fast-stop motion, to imitate the swimming action of a fish.
As for the rod, I prefer a medium action rod with a light set up — a 2000 or 3000 series reel — with a 25- or 30-pound monofilament line.

Fighting the Mike Tyson of the sea | Giant Trevally fishing

Fighting the Mike Tyson of the sea. Some call this fish the muscle car of the ocean.
Giant Trevally fishing is one of the most challenging kind of fishing, especially when you use the artificial lure popping or stick bait technic. They are full of energy, speed and cardio. They normally hunting near rocky area or man made structure like oil rigs, making it harder for the anglers to land them. These challenging areas normally cut the leader or the main line which resulting the anglers are at the losing end most of the time. But a strike is always worth fighting and a victory for the angler is deserve a celebration.
Make fishing great again!!

Island popping for GT

Most places in Borneo you have to cast hundreds or thousands times before you get a strike for a decent size GT...and for 'bonus'...you 'need' to miss couple of this 'muscle car of the sea' before you can land one...that is probably the reason why we are so content with this trophy...๐Ÿ˜Š
